Refreshing my memory.

October 11th, 2009

Sitting in a bus going back to Jyväskylä. Dropped Kaisa and Lauri off at her sisters place in Lahti. Finally had the time to fix this blog and its login function.

So. last post was about my new job. Still working there but the technologies changed about a month in the job. Now I have been coding in Java EE with Struts and Hibernate, and for a while worked the insides of IBM WebSphere Commerce Server. This has been great, learning new techs and applying my skills to challenging tasks hasn’t gotten me bored yet. Sometimes even stressed a bit too much.

Meanwhile at home. Lauri is now a big boy, starting to learn how to walk. He has been in daycare for two months now and has made new friends there. We moved to Halssila at the start of July to a two storey terrace apartment.

I have some projects going on to keep my mind occupied in my freetime. More on these later.

New Job!

May 5th, 2009

I’m feeling a bit tired. I started in a new job as a System Designer at Samcom about two weeks ago and it has been wonderful. My days have been filled with tutorials and exercises on Sharepoint Server and Services. Slowly but surely I’m becoming quite the expert :)

At the same time though, I’d have to do about a dozen different group works for my marketing studies and try to find a subject for my thesis. These put a bit of a strain on my organizing skills, but it’s still manageable.

And then there’s Lauri on top of that all. We’ve been keeping sleepschool for him for a few nights now and he hasn’t shown any major co-operation towards sleeping the whole night. Last night I was so tired I didn’t even wake up as Kaisa tried to calm him. That’s no suprise, as I have never had trouble with sleeping, only the going-to-bed part.

p.s. I have finally been pressured to register at Facebook, so if you regard me as a friend, add me. And, if you prefer LinkedIn, my connections need a bit of improvement.

Harvesterrock.com ‘new’ site design

March 9th, 2009

Noticed I hadn’t posted about this last year, when I first designed this new look for Harvester Rock website. The theme is still in use, just changed the date in the header background image and throughout the site. Some small changes are planned, but a new design might be in place.

What’s new is the AJAX based login slider on the top of each page. It’s great, because new users see right away where you can register for the site. Planning to add RSS feed links there too. When you are logged in, it shows quick links to your most used settings. Here’s a tutorial for the slider by Jeremie Tisseau, try it for yourself. Great site for a webcrafter. Thanks Jeremie.

Minihelvetti login integration

February 11th, 2009

This ticket had been around for too long, so I decided to make use of it. I needed a subject for an integration exercise for a course I’m attending and this seemed a simple enough task.

So, the problem was that we had a Wordpress blog engine and a phpBB3 forum on Minihelvetti website and users had to register and login to both separately, and the matter that I had already done similar themes for both, confused some users even more. The solution seemed simple, but WP-United didn’t work the way it should have and it’s support seems to have disappeared.

Enter: Onepress Community. This piece of software solved most of our problems instantly. Thanks guys!. I have had to make some modifications to fit our system, but it works great. Some parts seem a bit rough (like the login, register and user forms) but they work. All it needs is a bit CSS and some backstabbing.

If you’d like to have the report on the exercise, in which I – very briefly – state out different approaches to the integration process, just leave a comment with your email. It’s all in Finnish, sorry.

Lisää naurua.

February 9th, 2009

Pyykkinaurut

December 11th, 2008

Networking. Really.

July 2nd, 2008

Lately I’ve had trouble with my main computers hard drives, so I decided to buy a new network attached storage disk to get rid of some space issues and to make switching drives on the desktop machine easier. This led to a ‘vortex of rearmament’, as we say in Finnish, because I had been using Internet via a wireless 54g connection since our apartment has a network socket only in the bedroom. Solving this problem was easy, get a gigabit switch, a gigabit PCI card and 15 meters of Cat 5e. Killi the cat helped with the final inspections.

The old server ‘chatura‘ in the old network installation graph has been sold earlier since I didn’t figure out a good function for it and it was only standing there gathering dust. The new NAS ‘ekanta’, a Buffalo Linkstation is now serving as a storage for photos, documents and edited videos. Hopefully we can now get rid of all the CDs and DVDs filled with photos. Next hardware investment might be a MSI Wind or some other netbook as soon as they hit Finland (we are still waiting for EEE 701’s…).

A new hobby.

July 2nd, 2008

Summer is here. Seems I haven’t been posting in two months so I guess it’s time to write something again. June passed quickly as we traveled across Finland, first visiting Kaisas aunt and great-uncle and my cousin at Korso and Kerava a week before juhannus, spent a few days at home and left for Pyhäjoki to spend juhannus at Liisas beach house. I bought a bluetooth GPS module for my phone to help navigating to these different locations, which leads to an another story.

I had been wanting to try geocaching for a few years now, but hadn’t had the need for a GPS for anything other. Last weekend I decided to finally give it a try since I now had the hardware. We checked out a nearby cache with my wife, who, by the way is bursting from her seams as mid-August approaches, and have not been able to stop looking for other caches since. Yesterday we spent two hours looking for a couple of caches near Laajavuori. The other one (GC1C6JC) was in a very cool place indeed.

Next weekend is the only weekend we have nothing to do. The other weekends this summer are all filled with weddings and other mandatory travels. I guess we might include our new hobby to these travels for better efficiency…
